Cook fill-in Taylor lifts England to 265 in Colombo

Cook fill-in Taylor lifts England to 265 in Colombo

England's James Taylor plays a shot as Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara watches during the fourth ODI in Colombo on December 7, 2014

Colombo (AFP) - James Taylor missed a maiden one-day century by 10 runs as England made 265 all out in 50 overs in the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday.

Taylor, given a chance to play his third one-day match only because skipper Alastair Cook was serving a one-game suspension due to slow over-rates, seized the chance with delectable strokeplay.

The 24-year-old hit six boundaries and two sixes in his 90 before holing out in the deep off Ajantha Mendis after suffering cramps caused by stifling heat and humidity.

Eoin Morgan, leading England in Cook's absence in a game the tourists have to win to level the seven-match series 2-2, struck 62 off 47 balls.

Morgan smashed 18 runs in the final over bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan before he was dismissed off the last ball of the innigs.

Spinners Dilshan, Mendis and Rangana Herath picked up three wickets each.

Taylor put on 93 for the third wicket with Joe Root (36) to lead a fightback after Sri Lanka had removed openers Alex Hales and Moeen Ali by the eighth over with the score at 29.

After Root was bowled by Herath in the 26th over, Ravi Bopara stepped in to help Taylor add 48 for the fourth wicket.

Sri Lanka were boosted by the return of star batsman Mahela Jayawardene, who missed the five-wicket defeat in the previous match in Hambantota due to personal reasons.

Five civilians killed in fresh east Ukraine violence

Five civilians killed in fresh east Ukraine violence

Kiev (AFP) - Five civilians have been killed in fresh violence in eastern Ukraine, where more explosions and gunfire rang out on Sunday, two days before the start of a planned truce, officials said.

Three civilians were killed and 10 were wounded overnight in the rebel bastion of Donetsk, where further explosions and gunfire were heard Sunday morning, local authorities said.

The pro-Kiev governor of the rebel region of Lugansk meanwhile said two civilians were killed in the village of Kryakivka after a shell fell in the yard of a house.

Lugansk, Donetsk and the area around Debaltseve have been the main areas hit by fighting, according to the military.

Observers for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe have also reported several convoys totalling 60 unidentified vehicles headed toward Donetsk from the city of Shakhtarsk, which is also under rebel control.

Kiev has announced a new round of talks with the pro-Russian rebels in Minsk next week to try and rescue a tattered September ceasefire.

The talks are to be held on Tuesday, also the date set by both sides for a fresh truce to come into force.

Fighting between Ukraine and the rebels in the east has claimed more than 4,300 lives.
