Freetown (AFP) - A doctor from Sierra Leone who has contracted Ebola was early Saturday flown to the US where he has residency to be treated for the deadly virus, a senior medical official told AFP.

The flight carrying Martin Salia left the airport at Sierra Leone's capital Freetown at 2:30 am (GMT), Dr Brima Kargbo, the country's chief medical officer, told AFP.

Hong Kong (AFP) - Three Hong Kong democracy protest leaders were Saturday turned back at the airport after being denied permission to board a flight to Beijing, where they hoped to bring their demands for political reform to Chinese authorities.

The leaders of the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS), spearheading mass rallies that have paralysed parts of Hong Kong for six weeks, said they were informed by airline officials that their permits used for travel to the mainland had been cancelled by Chinese authorities.

Top US military officer in Iraq to discuss war on IS

Baghdad (AFP) - The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, arrived in Iraq Saturday to discuss the expanding war against the Islamic State group, a senior US official said.

Dempsey flew in to hold talks with "Iraqi political and security officials on (the) next phase of the campaign to defeat (IS)," Brett McGurk, the number two US envoy for the coalition battling the jihadist group, said on Twitter.
